The Belay Rappel
The Belay Rappel (Calata a Tampone)
In canyoning, unlike climbing, you don’t actually rappel.
But you descend with a tool that’s practically no longer used today—the figure 8. In this case, you use the Piraña—and you descend on a single branch, which is held in place on the rappel ring by a knot created with a carabiner or, if you want to make it releasable, with a figure 8.
Once we reach the water, the rope comes out of the descender because the main risk here is the water. We must avoid getting tied to the rope when we enter the water, so the rope ends just as we enter, and it must be perfectly sized.
Then, when we reach the bottom, we retrieve it with the other end.
